What is renewable energy?

The energy produced from sources that are naturally replenishing or which is endless is known as renewable energy. Renewable resources are virtually inexhaustible in duration but limited in the amount of energy that is available per unit of time.

Like the sun, a renewable energy source is sustainable and never runs out. Renewable energy sources are also included under the term alternative energy. In other words, it refers to sources of energy that are an alternative to the most commonly used non-sustainable sources – like coal.

The use of renewable energy contrasts with the help of fossil fuels, which are being depleted much faster than replenished. Compared to other energy sources, which are confined to a limited number of countries, renewable energy resources and significant opportunities for energy efficiency exist across a wide geographical area.  In recent years, solar and wind power have become much more affordable.

Different types of renewable energy

1.Solar energy

The most abundant energy resource on Earth is solar energy, which can even be generated in cloudy weather. The rate at which the Earth intercepts solar energy is about 10,000 times greater than the rate at which humans consume energy.

Solar technologies can provide heat, cooling, natural lighting, electricity, and fuels. Solar technologies convert sunlight into electricity by using photovoltaic solar panels or mirrors that concentrate solar radiation. 

2. Wind energy

Clean energy can be generated by wind in abundance. It is becoming increasingly common to see wind farms in India.

Wind turbines drive generators that feed electricity to harness wind energy. A domestic wind turbine installation is not suitable for every property, despite the availability of off-grid generation systems. 

3. Hydro energy

Hydropower is one of the most commercially developed renewable energy resources. By building a dam or barrier, a large reservoir can be used to control the flow of water, generating electricity. 

In addition to being more reliable than solar or wind power (especially if it’s tidal power rather than river power), this type of energy can be stored for use when demand peaks.

4. Tidal energy

Tidal currents are used to drive turbine generators in this form of hydro energy. Although tidal flow is not constant like other hydro energy sources, it is highly predictable and can compensate for low tide periods. 

5. Geothermal energy

In geothermal energy, the Earth’s interior generates thermal energy. Wells or other methods are used to extract heat from geothermal reservoirs.

Natural hydrothermal reservoirs are sufficiently hot and porous, while enhanced geothermal systems are adequately hot and permeable with hydraulic stimulation.

It is possible to generate electricity from fluids at various temperatures once they reach the surface. With more than 100 years of experience, hydrothermal reservoir technology has proven reliable and mature.

6. Biomass energy 

Biomass is a biological material derived from living or recently living organisms. Most often, it refers to plant-derived materials, specifically lignocellulosic biomass. Biomass can be used directly to produce heat through combustion or indirectly through conversion into various forms of biofuel. 

Various methods can convert biomass into biofuels, including thermal, chemical, and biochemical processes. In a second sense, biomass refers to plant or animal matter that can be converted into fibers or other industrial chemicals, such as biofuels. Miscanthus, switchgrass, hemp, corn, poplar, willow, sorghum, sugarcane, bamboo, and various tree species, from eucalyptus to oil palm (palm oil), can be used to produce industrial biomass.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that renewable energy sources will make up 30% of the global electricity supply by 2024.
